Make an
impact today
Support our mission by signing up to become an AccessLab beta tester.
AccessLab is a mobile community-based research initiative focused on identifying and removing barriers to accessibility in homes, buildings, and public spaces – particularly in rural and remote communities across Canada.
Participants examine not only physical access barriers but also sensory, cognitive, social, and emotional factors that impact their ability to fully engage in everyday environments. Through this pilot, we are gathering insights to inform the development of a first-of-its-kind mobile accessibility unit that brings inclusive design expertise directly to those who need it most.
We’re currently seeking beta testers across Canada to help shape our first phase of development. We are specifically searching for those who:
Navigate barriers due to disability, chronic illness, neurodivergence, or aging
Live in rural, remote, or underserved communities where accessible options are limited
Experience cognitive or sensory accessibility challenges
Are caregivers or support workers in accessibility-challenged environments
Want to co-create practical, low-cost design solutions
As a tester, you will:
• Try out simple prototype tools for recognizing and assessing barriers and future accessibility challenges
• Provide feedback and photos expressing your needs and experiences
• Have the opportunity to meet with us to discuss your concerns
• Receive a small thank-you gift
Process:
Apply to become a beta tester. Applications close August 31, 2025.
Selected participants will be notified beginning in late September and have until November 15, 2025 to complete their self-assessment. The expected time commitment is approximately two hours. Meeting with our team is optional.
Upon submission and team review of your self-assessment, you will receive a small thank-you by email for your participation.
Should you provide consent, we will stay in contact with you about your impact on our development.
Our participatory and trauma-informed design process prioritizes dignity, safety, and emotional connection. We offer neurodivergent-friendly sessions and offline options for regions with poor internet connectivity. AccessLab is committed to building with communities. Your input helps shape an innovative equity-driven future for accessible living to empower people to live in their homes for longer and enjoy their community spaces fully.

FAQs
-
As a beta tester, you’ll be invited to assess a space you use regularly –such as your home, workplace, or a community location like a recreation centre – for accessibility barriers. This includes physical, cognitive, and psychological barriers that may affect your ability to fully participate in activities within that space.
You’ll reflect on your experiences, identify challenges, and suggest adaptations or improvements that would make the space more inclusive. You’ll also be asked to provide supporting materials such as photographs, videos, or sketches to help us better understand the space and your perspective.
Your contributions will directly inform the design and features of our innovative mobile accessibility units, helping us create a service that truly meets the needs of diverse communities across Canada.
-
Duration will depend on the individual. Self-assessments should take less than two hours but depend on the size of your space. If you graciously welcome one of our team members for an in-person visit, expect about 90 minutes of assessment and conversation.

We are looking for applicants of varying abilities. Please contact our Executive Assistant, Hannah McKail, at hannah@biotectureinc.com to arrange a phone call or Zoom meeting. We are happy to meet any accommodations required for participation.
-
This initiative is for research purposes only. You will not have any modifications to any of your spaces.
-
By participating, you're helping us co-create a scalable accessibility solution that addresses real barriers.
Our goal is to develop mobile units equipped with cutting-edge tools like 3D scanning for custom retrofit recommendations, modular sensory kits, and telehealth consultations.
This beta phase will shape how we scale, prioritize features, and create long-term value for underserved communities. Your feedback will directly inform the development of an inclusive, high-impact service that redefines what accessibility looks like locally and nationally.
