    Junior Architectural Designer (Summer Intern)

    10 hours/week

    $25-30/hr (commensurate with experience)

    About Us

Biotecture Inc. is evolving into a multidisciplinary parent company advancing socially responsible architecture, real estate development, innovation, and strategic foresight. We are grounded in principles of justice, sustainability, and community resilience, and we prioritize partnerships that benefit historically marginalized and equity-deserving communities.

Biotecture Inc. Architects is the architectural arm of this ecosystem, with an emerging focus on humanitarian, health-centred, and regenerative design. We explore how architecture can support healing, dignity, and agency—particularly for communities who have been underserved or systematically excluded.

    Role Overview

Our Junior Architectural Designer (Summer Intern) will play a key role in shaping Biotecture Inc. Architects’ early design language and narrative for humanitarian work. This internship is for a final-year architecture student who is deeply interested in:

    • Social enterprise and community development

    • Regenerative and climate-resilient futures

    • Inclusive, trauma-informed, and accessibility-focused design

    • Innovation at the intersections of architecture, health, and systems change

This is a part-time, project-based, design-focused role emphasizing conceptual thinking, visual storytelling, and research-informed design.

    Eligibility

    · Applicant must be enrolled in their final year of a CACB accredited Master’s in Architecture program in Canada: https://cacb.ca/accreditation/accredited-programs/

    · Applicant must be enrolled in full or part-time studies for at least the first 30 days of the internship at an eligible school listed on the Government of Canada's website: List of designated educational institutions - Canada.ca

    Project Briefs

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering fully developed conceptual drawings and renderings for two humanitarian projects:

    Community Centre in Gaza

    • A resilient, community-led gathering space that supports healing, education, and social cohesion.

    • Focus on flexible, multipurpose spaces; climate-responsive design; and culturally grounded programming

    Dementia Village in Canada

    • A small-scale, village-like environment that centres dignity, autonomy, and safety for residents living with dementia.

    • Focus on wayfinding, sensory comfort, nature integration, and supportive community infrastructure.

Scope may also include early-stage ideation for future humanitarian concepts (e.g., Indigenous-led healing or cultural spaces) as time and capacity allow.

    Key Responsibilities

    · Concept Development & Design

o Develop conceptual site plans, massing, and spatial layouts for the two core projects.

o Produce drawings, diagrams, and visual narratives that communicate design intent clearly to non-architect audiences.

    · Visualizations & Presentation

o Create compelling renderings, diagrams, and presentation boards suitable for portfolios, stakeholder conversations, and future funding applications.

o Prepare a concise design package for each project (e.g., 3–5 boards and a brief written narrative for each concept).

    · Research & Precedent Studies

o Conduct precedent research on humanitarian architecture, dementia care environments, trauma-informed design, and/or community-led spaces in conflict and post-conflict contexts.

o Summarize findings in short memos or visual research sheets that inform design decisions.

    · Inclusive & Regenerative Design Integration

o Integrate EDIDA principles (equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, accessibility) into design thinking and documentation.

o Consider mental health, sensory experiences, and culturally responsive design in spatial strategies.

    · Collaboration & Communication

o Attend regular virtual check-ins to discuss progress, iterate on concepts, and align with Biotecture Inc.’s broader mission.

o Clearly communicate design rationale in both visual and written form.

    Qualifications

    • Currently in the final year of a CACB-accredited M.Arch program in Canada.

    • A strong interest in social innovation, systems change, community development, and regenerative design.

    • Demonstrated design skills through studio work, competitions, or previous experience.

    • Proficiency with relevant design tools such as Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, or similar, and Adobe Creative Cloud or similar (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) for presentation. The successful candidate is responsible for providing their own software.

    • LEED and/or WELL AP certification or similar preferred.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable explaining design thinking to non-technical audiences.

    Additional Information

    · This role is part-time and can be completed remotely within Canada.

    · The position will remain open until an ideal candidate is found.

    · The successful candidate will receive a verbal offer of employment, with finalization contingent upon securing external funding in spring 2026.
